The definition of paralegal is “one who deals with lawyers, and who knows how to be a good paralegal”.
In our case, that means we are a team of paralegals who have never actually practiced law. That sounds suspiciously like something that someone who is trying to avoid the law can do. However, if you think about it, paralegals usually do what we do. They are lawyers, so they need to be able to do the legal stuff.
It just makes sense that the two professions should have something in common. Lawyers, we are told, need to know how to work with other people, and paralegals need to know how to work with other people. In our case, a paralegal is someone who deals with lawyers.
The paralegal’s job is to work with other paralegals to sort out complicated legal issues. They need to know how to deal with a lawyer’s demands, how to work with a lawyer on the phone, how to deal with a judge’s orders, how to deal with a court-appointed lawyer, how to deal with the court when things get tricky, etc.
We are told to make sure we know our legal rights and responsibilities. And, as with any good cop/bad cop scenario, a good paralegal is not going to be above reproach and will not be a problem, because she’s a paralegal, and she’s bound by the law.
And as usual, the paralegal is a paralegal, and paralegals are bound by the law. So if you want to be a paralegal, you may want to read up on the rules first. It doesn’t mean you have to be a good paralegal, just know the rules and be aware of the consequences.
If you are a paralegal, you are bound by the rules of the office. And since you cannot be fired, you are bound by the rules of the office. And being bound by them can lead to disciplinary action. The best analogy in my mind is a paralegal who is bound by the rules of the game.
Being a paralegal is actually not that bad. Most paralegals have a very relaxed and fun office life. They are more likely to be in an office than at the office, which is why they are so popular. They don’t have to work a lot, and they can relax a lot. In fact, most paralegals have a lot of free time, so they are usually very productive.
