This means you will save money if you buy a home in the South Bay or East Bay, which are much more affordable.
However, there are a number of small-scale builders in the Bay Area that do charge more for a home that is smaller. For example, you can find a house for under $200,000 in San Jose that is built on an acre and has multiple bedrooms, an open floor plan with a separate living room, and a nice backyard with a pool. This is more common for the Bay Area than New York City, where neighborhoods in the Mid-West are more affordable.
I can’t think of a single builder or builder’s representative who doesn’t charge a premium for a smaller home. So it’s a good idea to shop around and see what kind of home you can afford before you purchase.
What’s amazing is that there are plenty of small houses out there in the Bay Area. It’s one of the reasons why these neighborhoods are so affordable. I’m in San Jose, so I have to tell you I haven’t walked around in a small house in six years. But a lot of the houses I have seen are quite nice. I mean, I’m sure that some of them are huge, but I’m still shocked that I see them in the Bay Area.
I agree. With any real estate in California, you should always be looking for smaller homes. These are houses that are a mere 20-30% of the size of the average home. There are plenty of them out in the Bay Area, but they aren’t necessarily the ones that offer the most value.
